French, German leaders to meet on Polish issue

West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt will visit Paris on Wednesday for talks with French President Francois Mitterrand, chief government spokesman Kurt Becker said.

He hinted that the talks would focus on the Polish crisis.

The announcement comes at a time of hardening West German attitudes over Poland after a US visit by Mr. Schmidt last week, when he joined President Reagan in saying the Soviet Union bore responsibility for events in that country. The French have condemned martial law from the outset.

Diplomats in Paris said it seemed certain the meeting had been arranged because Mr. Mitterrand and Schmidt were eager to display a common front over the Polish crisis and head off suggestions it had soured relations between them.
