Iranian throngs celebrate anniversary of overthrow

Hundreds of thousands of people marched in Tehran, Iran, Thursday to demonstrate their support for Iran's fundamentalist Muslim rulers on the third anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the Shah, Tehran Radio reported.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in a message marking the occasion, said his government was more powerful than at any time since the revolution.

Tehran Radio, monitored by Reuters, said millions of people shouting anti-American slogans converged on the capital's Azadi (Freedom) Square in a show of support for the government.
