Guatemala-Cuba-Nicaragua link?

The new military regime in Guatemala would like to set up a ''geo-political entity'' with the governments of Cuba and Nicaragua, General Efraim Rios Montt, the country's new leader, said in an interview here. Monitor Latin America correspondent James Nelson Goodsell writes General Rios Montt's suggestion for some kind of arrangement with such left-wing governments could mean a dramatic change of political position for Guatemala if carried out.

In addition, Guatemala's new leader told the Mexico City newspaper, Excelsior , his government is not asking for either military or economic aid from the US, but he said he would welcome new foreign investment in his country. Such investment could prove a blow to the political violence now stalking the country and the current economic downtrend which is so evident not only in Guatemala City but throughout the countryside.
