Agent in coup attempt seeks Seychelles asylum

Martin Dollinchek, a self-described South African intelligence agent captured after an abortive coup attempt in November against the government of the Seychelles, applied for political asylum, according to Seychelles authorities here. Monitor contributor Tom Fawthrop writes Mr. Dollinchek, who had faced a possible death penalty, is expected to testify in support of allegations that South Africa backed the coup attempt in this Indian Ocean island republic.

Seychelles authorities reportedly offered Mr. Dollinchek a safe home in the Seychelles in return for his testimony.
