Archibald MacLeish, poet and statesman

Archibald MacLeish, who passed on here, was a Harvard-- and Yale-educated lawyer, poet, statesman, and philosopher. He was a librarian of Congress from 1939 to 1944, served as an undersecretary of state under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was the architect of UNESCO, and taught English at Harvard for 23 years. Mr. MacLeish won three Pulitzer Prizes: for the poem ''Conquistador'' in 1933, for ''Collected Poems 1924-1952'' in 1952, and for his 1958 verse play ''J.B.,'' a modern version of the Bible's book of Job.
