South African rand hits record low against dollar

The South African rand fell to a record low of 93.05 cents Tuesday, reflecting the dollar's recent rise on international foreign exchanges and sterling's decline because of the Falkland Islands crisis. The latest rate compared with a peak of just above $1.35 at the beginning of 1981.
