Solidarity tells activists to plan a general strike

The Solidarity underground, buoyed by a successful 15-minute strike, told union activists to plan a general strike in Warsaw against martial law, since smaller protests had failed.

Workers have become radicalized since martial law was declared Dec. 13 and several dozen large enterprises asked the committee to set a date for a general strike.

Polish authorities removed a marble stone laid by Solidarity supporters in a central Warsaw square to commemorate the deaths of nine people who died in a clash between miners and security forces in December.
