For those who like to take day trips, a new book called ''Daytripping and Dining in New England'' by Betsy Wittemann and Nancy Webster (Imprint, West Hartford, Conn., $6.95) is a delightful collection of the authors' favorite spots in the New England states, combined with their choices of nearby places for enjoyable dining.

This combination can make for some memorable excursions, such as a visit to a Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vt., followed by lunch sitting on an outdoor deck savoring homemade soup and homebaked bread at a restaurant in Middlebury, or perhaps a boat trip to the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire, combined with lunch in one of Portsmouth's charming eateries. Other destinations include a Shaker village in Maine, an herb farm in Connecticut, and an art museum in Rhode Island, all with equally interesting suggestions for meals closeby. A perfect book for planning weekend getways.
