US to warn men who face draft prosecution

Selective Service System officials are combing through social security numbers to find the names of young men who have not registered for the draft and to begin prosecuting them, service officials said.

About 527,000 failed to register. But the names that pop up will not be immediately forwarded to the Justice Department for legal action. They will be put on a mailing list to receive a letter informing the men of their obligation, the procedure for registering, and a warning that failure to register is a felony punishable by up to a $10,000 fine and five years in prison.
