Nicaragua asked to review 3,000 imprisonment cases

Amnesty International, the human rights organization, called on Nicaragua to review the cases of more than 3,000 people imprisoned after the left-wing overthrow of Gen. Anastasio Somoza's goverment in 1979.

Those jailed were mainly members of General Somoza's National Guard or alleged collaborators with it, Amnesty said. Some 4,330 people were convicted by special tribunals (set up after the ouster of General Somoza and dismantled in 1981), and 3,174 of them were still in prison this year.
