Pro-Cuban Grenada signs for Soviet aid package

Prime Minister Maurice Bishop of Grenada, the West Indies republic and former British colony, said he concluded substantial economic and political agreements with the Soviet Union to cut his country's dependence on the West.

He said Moscow granted $1.4 million in aid to buy 500 metric tons of steel, 400 tons of flour, and other essential goods. The Kremlin, a strong supporter of Mr. Bishop's pro-Cuban policies, also granted a 10-year credit of $7.7 million to buy other equipment. The interest rate was set at 3 percent, with provision for a period of grace in repayment.
