Hinckley waives right to hearing on release

John Hinckley Jr. waived his right to a court hearing next week to determine if he could be released from custody.
Mr. Hinckley, who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in last year's shooting of President Reagan and three others, has been confined to a federal mental institution since June 22. A psychiatric team recommended he remain confined because he was a danger to himself and to others.
A spokeswoman for the prosecutors said the US attorney's office had not yet decided whether to oppose the Hinkley waiver.
