House OKs replacement for CETA jobs program

The House approved a bill authorizing a new jobs training program, but agreed to cut funding to avoid a possible veto by President Reagan.

Supporters said the new program, approved 356 to 52, would train more than a million unemployed people, and continue the Job Corps and summer youth jobs programs. It would replace the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act public-service jobs program, which expires next month.

The Senate had already approved a similar bill and House-Senate conferees must work the two versions into a single bill for Congress's approval.
