British government doffs stake in North Sea oil

The British government ordered the state-owned British Gas Corporation to sell off its stake in six North Sea oilfields.

The unexpected step, announced by the Energy Department, was taken under a law passed in June. The Conservative government is committed to selling nationalized concerns to private industry.
