ALSO OF NOTE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Although it is in the midst of some of the heaviest fighting, Lebanon's National Museum is still protecting national treasures. Israeli forces last week captured the museum from Palestinians, who had turned it into a bunker. Structural damage to the building is extensive, but most statues and other archeological treasures had been sealed inside concrete casings by Lebanese curators some years ago. These housings will be chipped away only after all the guns fall silent.

Israeli soldiers at the museum say they have found many small objects -- coins and figurines -- in the gear the guerrillas left behind. The Israelis say they are taking care not to cause further damage to the building and its stores during their occupation.
