China calls US account of joint accord distorted

China accused US officials of trying to distort the terms of last week's joint Sino-American policy statement on Taiwan.

The New China News Agency sharply criticized remarks by Reagan administration aides that Washington's intention to limit and gradually reduce the US arms flow to Taiwan depended on a Chinese commitment to seek peaceful reunification with the Nationalist-ruled island. The news agency said the two issues are entirely different in nature.

Also over the weekend, in a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping criticized (without mentioning names) the US and Soviet Union for ''sowing discord'' by seeking dominant roles in international affairs. Analysts said his remarks may have been an attempt to appease hard-liners over the Sino-American communique.
