The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 18.31 points for the week to close at 906.82. The widely-watched average fell as profit takers cashed in on record gains made in the rally which began in mid-August.

The market's lackluster performance also reflected, among other things, the Commerce Department announcement that businesses plan to spend 4.4 percent less in 1982 on plant and equipment than they did in 1981. And some analysts were troubled by word that prices grew at a 7.5 percent annual rate in August.
