Studies have shown that nonverbal behavior - gestures, nodding, eye contact - has a leadership relationship. And a look at the 1980 Carter-Reagan debate by three Texas Christian University professors indicates that Reagan was a lot more fluid with his nonverbal activity. Perhaps most significant, Reagan maintained direct eye contact with the television audience for 229 seconds, as opposed to a shy Carter's 10 seconds.

''Reagan looked more like a leader at a time when Americans were trying to select a leader,'' says William E. Jurman, one of the researchers.
