New headstone at grave of victims in '67 incident

A new headstone over the grave of six US servicemen killed aboard the USS Liberty off Israel's coast June 8, 1967, is being unveiled today (Oct. 6) in Arlington National Cemetary, Monitor writer Joseph Harsch reports.

Survivors and relatives of the 34 killed in the sea and air attack objected to the original stone, which simply stated that they had died.

Israel claimed the incident had been an accident. Survivors claim the daytime incident could only have been intentional and that the use of the word ''died'' on the original headstone was part of a US government whitewash of the action. The new stone does not say who killed the servicemen.
