Voting on Chrysler pact indicates heavy defeat

A tide of votes against a tentative agreement between the United Automobile Workers and Chrysler Corporation, the nation's No. 3 automaker, forced UAW president Douglas Fraser to admit the contract's ratification seems ''hopeless.''

Six major locals completed voting by Wednesday and all turned down the contract. A defeat is likely to send negotiators back to the bargaining table. Rejection of the contract would also seriously undermine Chrysler's recovering financial base, industry analysts say.
