Angry squatters stone US Consulate in Amsterdam

About 600 police used sticks and tear gas to battle nearly 1,000 squatters who demonstrated in front of the US Consulate in Amsterdam. The consulate was stoned in the fighting - the worst squatter violence in two years.

Police said nine rioters were arrested and five officers were injured. Squatter sources said at least 30 demontrators were hurt. The fighting was triggered by the eviction of five squatters from a $130,000 villa, police said. It was the worst squatter riot in Amsterdam since December 1980, when police evicted squatters from a building about 200 yards from the scene of Monday's violence.
