In this case, it was a 13-ton, South African artillery piece. South Africa found a way to quietly ship its most advanced field gun, the so-called G5, to Greece for an arms show without creating any advance adverse publicity. South Africa's munitions manufacturer, Armscor, wants to become a major arms exporter and used the International Armaments Show in Athens (which ended Oct. 15) as a showcase for its wares. An Armscor official said this was the first time South Africa had exhibited its weapons overseas and he expressed some surprise that political pressure had not kept South Africa out of the exhibition.

However, there were reports Oct. 14 of mounting pressure to oust the South African exhibit.
