Polish worker's funeral takes place quietly

More than 20,000 people attended the funeral here of a young worker killed by police last week after the abolishment of the independent Solidarity trade union. The funeral took place without incident.

In a separate development, 15 Poles escaped from Poland with their their children in a state-owned, crop-spraying biplane, avoiding radar by skimming low over the Baltic Sea in a bid for political asylum in Sweden.

Malmo police began an investigation into the Poles' escape and will submit a report on the findings to the Ministry of Immigration, which will rule on whether to grant asylum. Sweden generally grants asylum if the applicant would face danger if returned to his homeland.
