Italian prime minister wins confidence vote

Italian Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini won a vote of confidence on tax proposals aimed at cutting public-sector borrowing this year.

Mr. Spadolini won by 348 to 237 in an open ballot in the Chamber of Deputies, a majority of 111. The tax measures were immediately endorsed in a second, secret vote, which commentators thought could have produced a surprise upset for his fragile five-party coalition.
