US Marines to help patrol east Beirut

President Reagan approved a Lebanese request for US Marines to join French and Italian peacekeeping forces on mobile patrols through east Beirut, the State Department said.

The change in the role of some of the 1,200 American marines serving in Lebanon is designed to help the Lebanese government extend its control in the country.
