Gasohol sales way up in 1982, study shows

The first comprehensive survey of gasohol consumption has found that gasohol sales skyrocketed in 1982, and the new gasoline tax bill should accelerate the trend.

Oil industry expert Dan Lundberg said Friday that in 27 states where statistics are available, gasohol (which is one-tenth alcohol, nine-tenths gasoline) sales in September increased 224 percent compared to the year before. The federal government and 34 states have provided subsidies to encourage consumption, and the recently passed 5 cent-a-gallon tax increase provides a 1 -cent-per-gallon increase in the federal gasohol subsidy, Lundberg said.
