Coalition partners name new Portuguese premier

Vitor Crespo, the parliamentary leader of the Social Democrat Party and a former education minister, was named Portugal's new prime minister Monday.

Mr. Crespo, who holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley, succeeds Francisco Pinto Balsamo, who resigned Dec. 19th after suffering losses in municipal elections. The Social Democrats are the leading party of the three-party parliamentary coalition ruling Portugal.
