Thoreau gathered the singular shadows of white pond lilies on the rich-brown muddy bottom as he paddled up the Assabet and later, I believe he carried them home in his botany hat along with leaves of scrub oak, a hen hawk's feather, core of a pine cone, song of a bittern, ripples from the river and a scroll of sky . . .
