Thai-Kampuchean site hit by more fighting

Fighting around Nong Chan, a major refugee camp on the Thai-Kampuchean border , entered its second day Tuesday. Vietnamese forces and an estimated 2,000 troops of the coalition Khmer People's National Liberation Front are battling for control of the camp, according to Monitor contributor Paul Quinn-Judge.

International aid workers say that the camp, which housed up to 45,000 Kampucheans, was abandoned by the civilians and that part of it was on fire. The attack began Monday morning with an artillery barrage on the coalition headquarters, near the main refugee camp. Until the attack, Nong Chan was the main distribution point for food to some 200,000 displaced Khmers who lived scattered along the border.
