Gandhi party set for rebound in local elections

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Congress-I Party appeared headed for a victory in Saturday's local elections here. The municipal poll is important to Mrs. Gandhi after her party's big losses last month in two of its former bastions in the south.

Meanwhile, several incidents of violence were reported in the northeast state of Assam, where there is widespread opposition to the inclusion of illegal immigrants, mostly Bangladeshis, on electoral rolls.
