Polish leader unveils new economic program

Polish leader Wojciech Jaruzelski announced an anti-inflation package, a new taxation system, and tighter corruption controls intended to revive Poland's faltering economy.

Price rises - which in the past have touched off riots - have been officially forecast at 15 percent this year. But top government economists privately predict they will climb at least 25 percent. The Jaruzelski speech was given Monday in Katowice, the city where Lech Walesa had planned to attend a mass for Solidarity members imprisoned or killed.

But the leader of the banned trade union said transportation problems were keeping him from traveling.
