Poland's military ruler, Wojciech Jaruzelski, urged party members to show a new aggressiveness in their political work, and fiercely attacked intellectuals for spreading anticommunism. In a bid to reverse the party's unprecedented decline in the past three years, he told a party conference that Communist activists should stamp their influence on every aspect of Polish life.
