Queen travels to San Francisco

Queen Elizabeth II traveled to a San Francisco hotel, pursuing her US tour despite a severe West Coast storm. Staying in the same hotel with the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, were President and Nancy Reagan.

The weather did not cooperate, as heavy rains continued in California. The National Weather Service called the storm very dangerous.

Britons, meanwhile, watched with bemused tolerance the excitement the Queen's visit generated in the US. The British press even poked fun at coverage by the US press. ''Since the royals arrival on Saturday, everything from attempting to get the color of Prince Philip's underpants to quoting the Queen not wanting to be a pauper has been reported by the American media,'' said the Daily Express.
