Former pitcher to run for governor in Kentucky

A frantic search by Kentucky Republicans for a credible candidate for governor finally paid off. State Sen. Jim Bunning declared his candidacy for this year's election two days before the filing deadline, Monitor contributor Richard L. Walker reports. The former major league pitcher had been expected to make a bid in 1984 for the US Senate, but came under heavy pressure to consider the governorship. He said a GOP candidate could win the post despite the Democrats' more than 2-to-1 edge in voter registration.
