Sweden recalls envoy over submarine incident

Sweden recalled its ambassador to the Soviet Union after accusing Moscow of operating six submarines inside Swedish waters in October. The Swedish government formally protested the intrusions after a government report detailed Soviet submarine movement near the high-security Musko naval base on the Baltic Sea. Their activities were part of a wider Soviet operation along the Swedish coast, the report added. Relations between the two countries had cooled initially in October 1981, when a Soviet submarine became stranded in Swedish waters. This report is expected to strain ties even more.
