Ex-EPA official held in contempt in House

The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to cite former Environmental Protection Agency official Rita Lavelle for contempt of Congress. The reason: She refused to testify about toxic waste cleanup programs.

Miss Lavelle was fired in February as director of the EPA's toxic waste cleanup fund. The committee subpoenaed her a few days later to testify about charges of mismanagement, corruption, and political influence in the cleanup fund, but she has refused to appear.
