UN Council nears resolve affirming Nicaragua rights

The UN Security Council was expected to adopt a resolution reaffirming the right of Nicaragua and all other states in Central America to live in peace without outside interference, Monitor special correspondent Louis Wiznitzer reports.

The resolution reaffirms Nicaragua's right to sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with the UN Charter. It also calls for further peacemaking efforts by Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama, assisted by Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar. The draft isn't as strong as the Nicaraguans originally wanted. They had lobbied for a resolution calling for an end to a US ''undeclared'' war against Nicaragua.
