El Salvador may need US troops, senator says

Sen. Barry Goldwater (R) of Arizona urged President Reagan to pledge to send US troops to El Salvador if such a move were necessary to save Central America from Soviet aggression.

Senator Goldwater, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the situation had only become crucial in the past two months. On CBS' ''Face the Nation,'' Goldwater said he agreed with Lt. Gen. Wallace Nutting, outgoing commander of US forces in Latin America, who said the US had not done what was required in the region. General Nutting told the Washington Post that stopping Marxist expansion in Central America required an increase in US military aid and military trainers as well as a willingness to use American troops.
