Evidence shows Barbie may have had US help

Government investigators found some substance to charges that former Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie had ties to the US intelligence community, Justice Department sources said.

The department has been investigating Mr. Barbie's alleged links to the United States since March, the sources added, and a report is expected to be released in July. The probe was prompted by widespread allegations that after World War II Mr. Barbie was assisted by US intelligence agents in eluding French authorities who were seeking him for war crimes.
