Beirut airport reopens to commercial flights

Beirut airport, closed for six days after shell and rocket attacks from Druze militiamen, reopened to commercial flights. Lebanese press reports said the reopening followed mediation by envoys from Saudi Arabia and Jordan between the government of President Amin Gemayel and Walid Jumblatt, the leader of the Druze Muslims. Mr. Jumblatt gave assurances through the mediators that his men would not attack it again, the reports said.

The Druze militiamen had threatened to attack the airport again if a list of demands, including the resignation of Prime Minister Shafik Wazzan and more power in government for the Druzes, were not met.
