Reagan team endorses extending jobless benefits

The Reagan administration endorsed Tuesday an 18-month extension of the federal unemployment-benefit program that expires at the end of the month. If enacted by Congress, the proposed extension would eliminate the need to deal with the issue again before the 1984 elections. By extending the program 18 months instead of the usual six months, the administration aims to deprive opponents of some antiadministration rhetoric on the unemployment issue.
