House will apparently OK 18-month stay for Marines

The House Foreign Affairs Committee turned back challenges from dissident Democrats and overwhelmingly approved a compromise plan to keep the US Marines in Lebanon for another 18 months. The 30-to-6 vote sends the measure to the full House.

The vote came after a surprise move Wednesday night, when the House Appropriations Committee voted 20 to 16 to cut funding for the Marines in Lebanon unless President Reagan invokes the War Powers Resolution. An angered House Speaker Thomas O'Neill promised he would try to sidetrack the move.
