Los Angeles teachers reach tentative agreement

Negotiators for teachers and the board of education in the nation's second-largest school district agreed to a tentative contract Sunday, averting a threatened strike that would have affected 550,000 students.

The agreement is subject to ratification by the district's 26,000 teachers. Details of the agreement had not been revealed. But before the latest bargaining , union officials had said they would accept the district's last contract offer if the district would add 0.8 percent to its offer of a 7.8 percent wage hike.
