Salvadorean guerrillas seize town in fierce fight

Leftist guerrillas seized the town of Tenancingo, northeast of San Salvador, in fierce combat Monday which wounded at least 32 civilians, doctors said. The fighting started Sunday when Army patrols on a search mission in the area clashed with leftist rebels. Rebel units moved into the town late the same day. Guerrillas have long used the vicinity as a supply route for rebel forces occupying the strategic Guazapa volcano, to the northwest.

On other fronts, rebel units that had held the towns of San Jorge and San Rafael Oriente in eastern Usulutan Province for about 24 hours began pulling out Sunday.
