Meaning of trap removal by E. Germany unclear

The reported removal by East Germany of some border "booby traps" was seen Thursday in West Germany as largely symbolic, and officals here cautioned against a new wave of escape attempts. There was also uncertainty over the extent of the dismantling of lethal SM-70 shrapnel guns, which are triggered by trip wires.

A government spokesman said Bonn had word that eventually all 60,000 devices deployed along about one-third of the 800-mile border would be removed. West Berlin mayor Richard von Weiszacker said, however, that when East German leader Erich Nohecker raised the issue at a meeting earlier this month he was less specific. No time frame for the total removal was mentined. The spokesman stressed that Bonn had received no official direct notificatin of the measures from East Germany.
