S. Koreaean President names new government ministers
South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan has moved quickly to rebuild his decimated government with an experienced team of American-trained economic technocrats.
President Chun lost his closest economic advisors in an Oct. 9 explosion in Burma. This immediately raised concern about the fate of the economic reforms begun last year to lessen government controls and promote continued high economic growth. Most South Korean and Western observers, however, agreed that the President had chosen replacements capable of carrying out the plan without too much interruption.
The new foreign minister is Lee Won Kyung, who had a wide-ranging background as a diplomat and journalist before spearheading Korea's successful drive to obtain the 1988 Olympic games. As prime minister, Chun nominated Chin Iee Chong, who was chairman of the ruling Democratic Justice Party.
