Afghan capital is reported to contain 8 torture centers

Amnesty International said an investigation has reported at least eight torture centers in the Afghan capital of Kabul. The international human rights organization said evidence was taken from former prisoners of the state information police, the Khad. Torture victims included those suspected of government opposition and Afghans with relatives living abroad.

In Islamabad, Pakistan, Western diplomats said Tuesday that Afghan guerrillas fighting the Soviet-backed Kabul government had shot down two Soviet transport planes trying to resupply the besieged town of Khost in eastern Afghanistan, one of three Communist-held strongholds the guerrillas have been attacking for the past two months.
