Voters go to polls in Boston, Miami
An estimated 70 percent of Boston's 282,000 registered voters were expected to vote Tuesday in the first mayoral election in the city's 353-year history to pit a black man against a white man. City Councilor Raymond Flynn was expected to beat black candidate Melvin King, a former state representative.
Meanwhile in Miami, voters were to decide a race between incumbent Mayor Maurice Ferre and lawyer Xavier Suarez, who hopes to become the city's first Cuban-American mayor. In the preliminary election that included six candidates, Suarez trailed Ferre by only 201 votes. (Results will be analyzed in tomorrow's Monitor.)
