Strong earthquake hits Hawaii Island

A strong earthquake shook Hawaii Island Wednesday, bringing down power lines and causing landslides, police said. Communications with Hilo, the main town on Hawaii, were disrupted, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Seismologists measured the quake at 6.7 on the open-ended Richter scale. Large ground cracks were reported at Mauna Loa volcano, but an eruption did not appear immminent.
