Andropov sends Thatcher letter on new US missiles

A spokesman for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Tuesday she received a letter from Soviet President Yuri Andropov, reportedly describing the new US missiles in Europe as a threat to the Soviet Union that must be removed.

The letter was believed to be similar to those sent recently to West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi, and Belgian Premier Wilfried Martens.

Mr. Kohl said Monday a letter he received last weekend from Andropov indicated Moscow's readiness to review its decision to walk out of the Geneva arms talks.

Kohl said Andropov wrote ''the Soviet Union does not wish to view the existing situation as irreversible.''
